IUCN status : Endangered
The estimated population of chimpanzees in the wild ranges from approximately 172,700 to 299,700 individuals. This population is concentrated mainly across the forests and savannas of Central and West Africa. While the numbers might seem significant, chimpanzees are classified as endangered and face ongoing threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and disease outbreaks, including Ebola, which has had devastating effects on ape populations. Conservation efforts are focused on establishing protected areas, anti-poaching initiatives, and environmental education to support chimpanzee populations and safeguard their habitat.
There are approximately 1,800 to 2,000 chimpanzees in accredited zoos around the world, most of which are part of breeding programs like the Species Survival Plan (SSP) or the European Endangered Species Program (EEP). These programs work to maintain genetically diverse populations and support public education on conservation issues related to chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees face challenges from the illegal pet trade, habitat loss, and poaching, which contribute to the need for these managed populations. Additionally, zoos and sanctuaries often collaborate to provide appropriate environments and social groups that reflect their natural behaviors, aiming to improve captive welfare standards and raise awareness among visitors.
