Rotterdam, Blijdorp 2016

IUCN status : Near Threatened

The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) is currently classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List due to threats from climate change, particularly the loss of its Arctic sea ice habitat, which is critical for hunting and breeding.

In the wild, it’s estimated that there are around 22,000 to 31,000 polar bears across 19 distinct subpopulations. However, due to ongoing climate change impacts, particularly in regions with faster ice melt, some subpopulations are under more pressure than others, with declining trends in several areas.

In captivity, there are approximately 300 to 350 polar bears in zoos worldwide, most of which are part of structured breeding and conservation programs, including the Species Survival Plan (SSP) in North America and the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) in Europe. These programs aim to maintain a healthy and genetically diverse captive population to support public education and potential research that might aid in polar bear conservation efforts in the wild.
