IUCN status : Vulnerable

The population of mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) is challenging to estimate due to their dense rainforest habitat in Central and West Africa. It’s generally believed that fewer than 4,000 mandrills remain in the wild, where they face significant threats from habitat destruction, deforestation, and hunting, often for bushmeat. This combination of pressures has led to their vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List, with their numbers continuing to decline. The number of mandrills in captivity worldwide is estimated to be around 800 individuals, distributed across various zoos globally. These mandrills are part of managed conservation programs
