IUCN status : Critically Endangered

The Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is critically endangered, with an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 individuals remaining in the wild. These gorillas are primarily found in the dense rainforests of Central Africa, including countries like the Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon. Despite their relatively large population compared to other gorilla species, they face severe threats from poaching, habitat destruction, and diseases like Ebola.

In zoos, there are approximately 360 to 400 Western lowland gorillas. Zoos around the world, particularly in North America and Europe, participate in breeding programs coordinated by organizations like the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) and the Species Survival Plan (SSP) in the U.S., which aim to maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations of this species in captivity.

These programs help support conservation efforts in the wild by raising awareness and funding for habitat protection and research.

The most famous resident of Barcelona Zoo ; Snowflake ( ±1964 – 2003), was the world’s only known albino Western lowland gorilla.
